Washington Black and Rogues In Paradise - Barbados ↔ Halifax: Flight & Ground

The Caribbean and Nova Scotia were in journals: rum, sugar, fish, wood. Later they existed in safety, as Halifax opened doors to those leaving chains. Africville holds the memory-- durability, music, Sunday best-- together with a need to do better. Barbadians in Canada entered that story and wrote new chapters: Austin Clarke's novels, Cameron Bailey's curatorship, Anne Cools's bench-breaking firsts. The balloon in Washington Black indicates yearning; the harbour points to work-- of structure, inviting, and keeping faith with flexibility.
